Ms. Buck is a new addition to Hampton Bays High School’s mathematics department, where she teaches geometry to ninth and 10th grade students. She chose to work at Hampton Bays, since she grew up in a “close-knit community” and it reminds her of home.
Ms. Buck wanted to become a teacher because she used to play school when she was a child and she played the role of the teacher. She enjoys math because “there is always an answer” unlike other subjects in school. When she was in high school she realized that for teachers it isn’t just about the academics, but that it is important for teachers to make connections with the students. She has carried that with her now that she is officially in front of the classroom.
Ms. Buck greatly enjoyed her time at Sayville High School and tried her best to involve herself as much as she could with things such as school government and varsity cheerleading. She enjoyed being a part of the community and helping people as much as she can in her free time. This is something she still strives to do today.
Her favorite part of teaching so far is “meeting all the new people.” She is also feels she has connection with the freshmen she teaches, since she isn’t the only one starting off in a new school and they are starting off fresh too. Ms. Buck greatly cares about her students, is glad to grow new connections with her students, and learn new things about teaching for her first year.
Sophomore Noah Rodriguez appreciates her teaching style and said, “She speaks in a loud projected voice and takes time to go around to each student and make sure their answers are correct and they are properly learning.”
As well as her being a teacher she relates with students because she still goes to college classes, so she understands the struggles of balancing school work with other demands. She is working on her master’s degree in special education and may go back for her master’s in administration in a few years.
Ms. Buck’s life doesn’t fully revolve around teaching; she enjoys spending time with family and exercising. She spends time with her family by watching her nieces’ soccer games and spending her days off with them. She enjoys exercising and goes cycling in Soul Cycle quite frequently in her free time. She enjoys all the things she does outside of teaching and everything to do with teaching. We are glad to have her as a part of Hampton Bays staff!
