Sumeja Bytyqi, a senior at Hampton Bays High School, spent the several weeks practicing to perform, “I have nothing” by Whitney Houston at the Tri-M Winter Cabaret. After the performance, she said she thinks “it went pretty good” and when asked about her favorite part of the cabaret she said, “I enjoy performing in front of a large audience, conveying my emotions so everyone can understand the feeling and emotion of Whitney’s song.”
On Thursday February 12, the Tri-M Honor Society hosted a Winter cabaret night. Many students practiced for and performed the event.
Tri-M Honor Society is a music society which recognizes students for their musical and academic achievement. When asked why they chose to do a cabaret, Tri-M President Trey Scudder said, “So I think the reason that we have cabaret nights through Tri-M specifically is because Tri-M is a music-based honor society and having the cabaret nights it gives the members the opportunity to perform and really engage in music in a way that you really can’t do through like regular band or chorus, you get to play exactly what you want to play and really express yourself in that matter.”
In addition to helping host it, Scudder also performed in it with both of his bands. “I’m participating with both of my bands. The first band being with Gabe DiFrancesco, Noah Hafemeister, and Sean Loetscher. We’re doing ‘Eternal Life’ by Jeff Buckley. Then my other band is with James Maroulas, Esteban Lopez, Matteo Villano. And we’re playing ‘Just Like Heaven’ by The Cure and ‘Be Quiet and Drive’ by Deftones.” After playing the songs to great success and a loud applause from the audience, Scudder said, “I thought the performances went great! Playing ‘Eternal Life’ with Bleach was a ton of fun, and with Oroborealis I really enjoyed playing more heavy music with ‘Be Quiet and Drive’.”
Another student who performed was Johnny Coulton. Coulton performed “Dry hands and Wet Hands” by C418. He chose to perform this because “playing piano is one of my biggest passions, and I love the Minecraft soundtrack.” When asked he said his favorite part of the cabaret, he said, “What I enjoy about the cabaret is seeing how musically talented my classmates are, and getting experience performing in front of an audience.”
Tri-M shows no signs of stopping at Hampton Bays with the honor society hosting two more cabaret nights during the year.
