For the 2024-2025 winter sports season, Hampton Bays athletes finished strong. The varsity wrestling and cheerleading teams advanced to the Suffolk County Championships and members of both the boys and girls varsity winter track teams advanced to the Long Island Championships.
Cheer:
The Hampton Bays Varsity Cheerleading team has shown steady growth since they started competing 10 years ago. Despite tough competition they ended the 2024-2025 season with a program-high season average of 71.52 and are continuing to move in the right direction for seasons to come. After advancing to the Suffolk County Championship and landing in the top 50% of Class C, Head Coach Ms. Katie Drohan stated, “HBVC added difficulty to the routine and placed fourth for Class C at the Section XI county championship. We did well considering the skills that were added and both coaches are proud of the performance.” Ms. Drohan and her assistant coach Mrs. Nina Aiello extended their congratulations to their two senior captains Maddie Warn for earning the Suffolk County Cheerleading Coaches Association “All-Class” award and Eden Spellman for earning the Suffolk County Cheerleading Coaches Association “Academic All-County” award.

Wrestling:
The Hampton Bays Varsity ended their season strong, advancing to the County Championships and sending Cyrus Gutierrez to the State Championship where he placed eighth. Cyrus was the first All-State wrestler since 2006. Participating in tournaments throughout the season, the team had many notable high-performing athletes. Head Coach Mike Lloyd stated, “The season went quite well with a larger number of students choosing to come out for the sport and our largest number of seniors finishing the season in at least 9 years with 8 total.” All-County accomplishments included Kevin Saa Pacheco, fifth at 124lbs; Nilson (Danny) Quesada, sixth at 138lbs; Cyrus Gutierrez-Tyler, first at 145lbs; Angel Valverde, fifth at 152lbs; Brayden Havens, fourth at 160lbs; Mike Gutierrez, third at 215lbs, with Cyrus advancing to the New York State Championship. Boys Track:
The Hampton Bays Boys Winter Track and Field season finished off on March 1 at the Long Island Championships. Their season has been very successful with an overall younger squad. They had three All-League individuals, one All-League relay and one All-County relay. They qualified four athletes for the State Qualifiers and eight athletes for the Long Island Championships. The eight athletes who qualified for the County Championships did so by earning top qualifying times in their respective events. To qualify, they needed to be top 24 in your event in the entire county. Head Coach Vinny Battaglia extends his congratulations to All-League athletes Kevin Londono (2x), Erick Ibanez (2x), Daniel Ortiz (2x), and Charlie Alvarracin and to All-County athletes Kevin Londono (2x), Charlie Alvarracin, Daniel Ortiz and Erick Ibanez. Kevin Londono also ran 6.69 in the 55m dash earning him a fast enough time to qualify for Nationals and became the third fastest 55m dash runner the school has ever had.

Girls Track:
Last but not least, the Hampton Bays Varsity Girls Track and Field winter season overall went really well. They had a lot of new athletes this year, with a good number of freshmen and sophomores who came out to try the sport. This really helped build out the team and gave them opportunities to compete in a few relay events that in the past they struggled to fill. When these athletes continue with the sport in the next few years they should have a great team and are really looking forward to it. The hard work and commitment of the upperclassmen on the team drives their successes. The upperclassmen have put in the work over the last few years to build up their skills, and have worked, even during the off seasons, to maintain their abilities. Head Coach Mr. Michael Beretta stated, “Sophia Galvin worked really hard this season and placed sixth in the small school championships for the girls 1500m, running a 5:16. Junior Brianna Farrell also had a great season, showing amazing leadership and motivating her teammates. I look forward to her season in the spring and next year as a senior. Victoria Lopez [10th grade] has also shown a lot of promise and we look forward to her continued growth.”
The Hampton Bays varsity sports teams excelled over their winter seasons having some of the most high performing seasons HB has seen in many years. The senior varsity athletes will be greatly missed, as their contributions pushed all four teams toward their successes.
