Ms. Selg is one of the Hampton Bays High School’s social workers. This is her second year helping the students of Hampton Bays.
Before becoming a social worker Ms. Selg worked in foster care. She always loved working with kids and believes they are an important part of society that are often forgotten about. She wanted to pursue a job where she could be more directly involved with kids on a daily basis and wanted to be able to have a bigger impact on children’s lives so she earned her masters degree in social work.
Before Ms. Selg started her first full school year in 2023, she worked in the summer school where she was able to begin to build relationships with students. By being able to get to know some students from summer school she felt more comfortable going into her first year. During Ms. Selg’s time at Hampton Bays she has experienced making new connections with her students and being able to impact more children’s lives. Her favorite thing about her job is the relationships she gets to develop with students. She stated, “Being able to see the differences in students is rewarding.” When kids come to tell her about the things going on in their lives, good or bad, big or small, she feels honored that they feel confident telling her.
A few things Ms. Selg likes to do in her free time are working out, going on walks, and reading. She loves to occasionally go for a mini walk during her lunch break. Additionally Ms. Selg likes to work out because it helps her clear her mind. She stated that she tries to read when she has free time and is always carrying a book on her. She usually has the current book she is reading in her bag because she’s been trying to be better about not being on her phone as much.
Ms. Selg wants students to know that her door is always open and they can always talk to her no matter how big or small the issue is. Advice that Ms. Selg would give to the students of Hampton Bays is to not regret the past and be proud of the choices you make so that you can grow and move forward.
