If you see your character getting hit by a mythic lightning bolt, chances are you are entering one of the new points of interest (POI) called Mount Olympus, in Fortnite’s new season, “Myths and Mortals.”
On March 8, 2024, Epic Games released Fortnite’s second season of chapter five. The new season did have a rocky start, as gamers had to wait roughly about 17 hours to enter the game and play the new season. After a long wait, the downtime server issue was resolved by Epic Games and finally players could begin the new season.
This new season brought a lot of new changes to the game including different POI’s such as The Underworld, Grim Gate, Mount Olympus, and Brawlers Battleground. Not only that, new weapons were added such as the Gatekeeper Shotgun, Harbinger SMG, Huntress DMR, and Warforged Assault Rifle in the theme of this season.
Along with new POI’s there are also new bosses that players need to defeat to obtain a reward called a medallion. The new bosses are Zeus, Cerberus, Ares, and Hades. Zeus’ medallion gives the ability for the player to to run faster similar to the medallion Cerberus has which is agility. Hades’ medallion gives health boost after eliminating a player, while Ares’ medallion gives amplified damage output to a player.
Within the game are quests that players have to complete in order to level up; these are beneficial if you purchase the Battle Pass which gives you rewards. Each level up gives you five stars and depending on how much you gather, you can complete the battle pass within the first hundred levels.
There is a storyline called the Oracle Snapshot quest that players can complete by interacting with the entities and gaining XP points to level up. The storyline is entertaining and gives motivation to continue playing so that you can level up. Completed in 13 stages, the player goes to a Scrying Pool in the map where the game gives you tasks to complete. Within the tasks you go through different tests on agility, strength, and wisdom. After that you have to defeat Cerberus and Ares to complete the final stages.
Fortnite has already released their first season two update with a past game mode called “Floor is Lava,” character cosmetics, and a character called Midas who made an impact in chapter two season two. This is the first of many updates that will be added in the future.
Although this new season has mixed reviews, people’s main issue is based on skill level. Complaints usually revolve around being eliminated and losing while some get annoyed on how everyone lands on one certain location in the map; this however is normal when a new season is released. Nonetheless, some have said that having some areas of the map with less attraction was a nice pace of change. GameRant stated that, “Others emphasized that they prefer to land away from POIs, so they can get situated away from the more intense combat.”
A topic that keeps on being brought up in the Fortnite fandom is the item shop that regularly updates everyday at 8 p.m. There was a wide range of complaints on social media, especially on TikTok of people expressing how they dislike the item shop due to repetition of what’s included in the shop. People want to spend their in-game currency, V-bucks on skins or cosmetics to use in the game but the products are not up to people’s standards. Sometimes it’s frustrating to see the same thing in the item shop instead of it updating with new content that v-bucks can be spent on.
Fortnite’s new season, “Myths and Mortals,” may not be what it was expected to be based on the teasers that were released but it does add a new feel of Greek mythology along with new updates striding along to make the experience delightful. Whether you play alone, in duos, or squads, this game can oftentimes be addictive. It’s a good way to wind down from stress mainly when you play with your friends and win a match, which provides the feel of an adrenaline rush.
