Ms. Traiforos is a new teacher at Hampton Bays High School all the way from Bellmore, Nassau County.
Ms. Traiforos studied history and adolescence education for four years at the Long Island University Brookville campus. Ms. Traiforos has been interested in teaching ever since an old teacher of hers let Ms. Traiforos assist in teaching an ancient Greek unit. Ms. Traiforos’s teaching career began in Nassau County where she taught 11th grade U.S. history and life skills.
Here at Hampton Bays, Ms. Traiforos teaches U.S. history, economics, and her personal favorite, government. Ms. Traiforos enjoys teaching government most because she believes that it is important for students to understand “how our government works, what their rights are and ultimately how to become an active participant.” Ms. Traiforos likes that she can educate students on their rights as citizens so that after they leave high school “they can’t be taken advantage of for lack of knowledge or understanding.” Traiforos also enjoys the idea of students of different beliefs and opinions having a safe space for debates and discussions.
Ms. Traiforos is looking forward to getting to know more students and having more involvement in the Hampton Bays community. In fact, she recently helped out at the Homecoming dance. When asked about her experience, she said “I had a fantastic time at the homecoming dance!” She really liked the fact that “every class got to have someone in the ‘homecoming royalty’.”
Outside of teaching, Ms. Traiforos enjoys playing video games, walking her dog, and trying new things on Pinterest like cooking. She also enjoys traveling and learning about ancient cultures. Being someone who enjoys history, Ms. Traiforos wishes to someday visit countries with richer histories like Rome and Egypt. “I’d love to see the pyramids,” she said. Ms. Traiforos also wishes someday to travel to Tokyo and other cities in Japan like Hiroshima and Nagasaki to learn more about Japanese culture.
